Evaluation of the Campania Oncology Network Pathway: Focus on the Lung GOM

The study “Evaluation of the Campania Oncology Network Pathway: Focus on the ‘Lung GOM’” has been published in Politiche Sanitarie. The study was carried out as part of the collaboration between the VIMASS Research Lab at the University of Naples “Parthenope”, the IRCCS “Fondazione G. Pascale” National Cancer Institute, and the Campania Region.

The study forms part of the Lab’s research activities focused on performance measurement and the improvement of healthcare service organization. The study examines the organizational and economic aspects of the Campania Oncology Network (ROC), with a specific focus on the Diagnostic, Therapeutic and Care Pathway (PDTA) for lung cancer. The aim is to understand how the network-based management model affects care processes and cost dynamics, identifying critical issues and potential areas for improvement.

To address this objective, a dashboard of clinical and economic key performance indicators (KPIs) was developed. The research integrated primary and secondary data through source triangulation, applying both descriptive and inferential statistical analyses. The study examined care delivery times, the costs associated with inefficiencies and outbound patient mobility, and outlined potential cost and savings scenarios.

Among the key findings, the analysis highlights the role of screening and early diagnosis in reducing the costs associated with the oncology care pathway. The analysis also highlights the need to implement measures aimed at reducing outbound patient mobility and addressing the organizational challenges identified.

The study provides useful insights for healthcare managers and institutions, highlighting performance monitoring as a valuable tool to support decision-making. For VIMASS, the publication represents a contribution to the development of evaluation tools capable of linking research, healthcare management, and the improvement of care pathways.
